There is a continuum where beauty and function blend and diverge in the hands of the contemporary artist. Even when traditional materials such as thread, fabric, wood, reed, and paper are used, these artists combine skill, imagination, and vision to meld their materials into compelling and beautiful art, which resonates in today’s world. "Art Evolved: Intertwined" is a collaboration between Studio Art Quilt Associates and the National Basketry Organization. After a rigorous jurying process, 59 artists from both organizations were invited to participate in this conversation, which highlights the enduring connections between quilting and basketry, as well as the relationship between beauty and functionality. The exhibition will travel to the Yellowstone Art Museum (MT), Pacific Northwest Quilt and Fiber Arts Museum (WA), Lauren Rogers Museum of Art (MS), and Fuller Craft Museum.

Printed and Stitched in Time: Stories of Undaunted Women
Fiber and mixed media artist Sandra Mayo presents "Printed and Stitched in Time: Stories of Undaunted Women" at The Vilna Shul. This fiber art exhibition explores the intertwined stories of Sara Rus and Ruth Paradeis, two Jewish women who survived the Holocaust only to face the disappearance of their children decades later during Argentina’s military dictatorship. Through her CJP/JArts Community Creative Fellowship, Sandra has researched the forces that sustain us in times of profound social trauma. Using Genograms—symbolic relational diagrams—as her visual language, she has developed new symbols for human rights and resilience, incorporating monoprints, screenprints, and embroidery on delicate yet durable materials. This work not only honors Sara’s and Ruth’s determination but also invites you to reflect on the small yet powerful connections and choices that help us endure and move forward. What rituals, relationships, and moments of meaning sustain us in difficult times?

Holding Thoughts
Virginia Mahoney’s exhibition, “Holding Thoughts” at Boston Sculptors’ LaunchPad Gallery, presents woven forms made of strips of old paintings and reclaimed food net. Before weaving, the paper strips are written on or stitched with words or passages from her old sketchbooks, an act that feels affirming and almost permanent. This excavation of the past is a contemplative act of remembering, honoring, and preserving, while processing uncertainty, change, and ruminations on present situations, advancing age, and the inevitable. Mahoney tries to hold on to where she has been with these vessel forms that reach out into space in an effort to assert and affirm power, self, mark, and agency. This exhibition is a walk through those pages and her reflections on our world–past and present–with its undulations and uncertainties, hesitations and doubts–and its speculations, expectations and hopes.

Gather x Gallery 360 - Tour of "Cat Mazza: Network"
Join mid-career textile artist and UMass Boston professor Cat Mazza for a tour of her solo show, "Network," which is on view through April 12 at Northeastern University’s Gallery 360. "Network" showcases how Mazza’s practice has shuttled between the analogue and the digital, using craft and digital media to probe urgent issues from globalization to the understanding and treatment of mental health conditions. Mazza, alongside programmer Eric St Onge, is known for creating the early freeware application knitPro (2004), which translates digital images into stitchable patterns online. Allowing for both individual idiosyncrasy and collective action, knitPro has supported a series of “micro-revolts” against sweatshop labor, and, most recently, a Covid-responsive participatory project installed at Northeastern. Other works on view employ knitPro’s moving image offshoot, Knitoscope, to translate digital video into knitted animations. Collaborative Banner-Making with wildlife imagery
Inspired by historical and current protest posters, banners, and bedsheet paintings (see additional information below), including the fabric banners of Aram Han Sifuentes and the block print banners of Peter Schumann, Cambridge Wildife Arts will host a series of sessions that welcome members of the public to sit around a table and stitch a single embroidered and/or appliquéd banner meant for use in vigils, protests, and parades. Echoing the suffragettes, The use of wildlife imagery combined with a single word emphasizing our commonality with nature on the banner emphasizes our resilience and interdependence with each other as does the experience of creating something from fiber working in a group or in a circle, common to many cultures and historical moments. The banner will be worked on in more than one venue, rotating within Cambridge starting on April 26 at the Magazine Beach event collaboratively run with Mass Audubon and continuing on to several venues currently being approached for subsequent sessions of working on the banner. The banner itself will be used in the 2025 Honk! Parade in Somerville/Cambridge and will be lent for use in other events by arrangement once it is completed.

Caron Tabb: A Stone in My Shoe
A Stone in My Shoe is a collection of multimedia artwork made by Boston-area artist Caron Tabb in response to feelings of grief, compassion, and resilience. Each piece in this body of work is deeply personal but intends to resonate universally, bridging individual burdens and collective pain. The title seeks to evoke both a physical sensation and an emotional resonance. The metaphor of a stone in one’s shoe speaks to the physical pain of something small yet persistently painful, often unnoticed by others. The sensation mirrors the universality of an unseen emotional burden, weighing on us even as we may appear outwardly composed. It straddles the personal and collective grief felt by so many. The works, crafted entirely in white, consist primarily of fiber installations, drawing upon the rich symbolism of Judaism and textile art to explore the intersection of emotion, spirituality and personal identity.
